Open Lab Notebook

Brief updates on my daily work. For more polished postings about math, collective behavior, research collaborations, and such, see News and Research.

I hope to work toward a more complete open notebook: for now I'm only posting updates on some of my work.

(yesterday's post provides context)

Waiting for large data set to complete. Writing the code to collect the data for something like Figs. 4 and 7 of the SAR paper. It looks good but I'll have to do some special big runs to get good-looking timeseries for these figures.

A long time ago I redid Sood, Antal, and Redner's diffusion equations for the evolutionary graph theory process on complex networks, generalizing it from undirected to directed graphs. It's been basically ready to submit for the last couple years, except for the figures and a bit of filling out, which is frustrating. I'm making a push to get the figures together and get it out the door.

It wasn't what I was planning to do, and there are bigger priorities, but I ended up fixing up the WorkingWiki standalone HTML output features. Stimulated by wanting to do the link I added to yesterday's post here (the last link in the post). That's a link to an HTML page which is a file made by WorkingWiki and served by WorkingWiki but as a self-contained page.

My plan was to get WorkingWiki to erase its old working directories so it doesn't eat up disk space, but instead I ended up writing an emulation .sty file for Sweave to make it look nice in LaTeXML for Ben Bolker. Part of the ongoing project of getting Ben to like WorkingWiki.

A long day massaging the website into shape enough to make the lab notebook posts public. I'm finally satisfied enough, and I've gone ahead and made it public, by adding it to the links that appear on the site's front page and hooking it up to mirror the posts to my facebook wall. I also set up a blogroll and clicked all the links so that my research-blog friends may see my site as a referring url - I don't know whether that has any effect or not. To do: email people telling them it exists; create a twitter account and mirror the feeds onto that.

How does large-scale social change sometimes happen abruptly without a clear cause? One day thousands of people take over the streets and refuse to leave until their demands are met. 20th century leadership-based models for social movements appear to be inadequate to explain how people are doing it this year.

One way to look at this is using a threshold model.

I'm starting up an open lab notebook on my website. I'm not going to try to expose all my research right as it happens, but I might try to do that in the future.

For now I'm going to post occasional pieces of writing, plus as many quick updates on research progress as I can keep up with.

Thanks David for this great quote:
