Open Lab Notebook

Brief updates on my daily work. For more polished postings about math, collective behavior, research collaborations, and such, see News and Research.

I hope to work toward a more complete open notebook: for now I'm only posting updates on some of my work.

I've been posting some weekly updates from the math class on Google Plus, and here and there, but I really should put them here and radiate outward from here.

Updated my Job Search Materials page after writing a substantially new teaching statement and revising the research statement, CV, and this site's publications page. I submitted them all to an East Coast university whose application deadline is today. Mission accomplished. Will I move if offered the job? I don't know, but I need to get those applications out.

For funding purposes, I was asked to write a report on progress on WorkingWiki since September of last year. Since I forgot about it until the last minute, and the last minute came a few hours before my Thursday evening class, when I still needed to write the homework and a few other things, I wrote the report in two hours flat. Don't believe me?

This week in my math class for art students we're getting to the section on cooperation and dilemmas, and we're going to do some cooperation-game classroom activities. I'd like to play for real money, to make the incentives more real.

This seems like an opportunity to experiment with crowdfunding. Can I raise $30 to pay for this classroom exercise? (Details of the $30 figure below.)

It may be obvious already from my earlier posts on the subject, but it occurred to me to say explicitly that I'm constructing the math course i'm teaching this fall in the open on my research wiki: http://lalashan.mcmaster.ca/theobio/worden/index.php/Math_class_for_art_...

I'm planning to keep posting everything from lecture notes to homework assignments. Not the readings that are copyrighted, though, or confidential info about students...

I've uploaded the material I used in my presentation about WorkingWiki at the workshop on Mathematical Wikis in Nijmegen, the Netherlands.

I did the presentation as a live demo with wiki pages open in browser tabs, so there aren't really "slides" to link to, but here is all the material I used.

Almost forgot to mention, I'm back to writing grants in the open again. Actually, this one's a fellowship application, but it's similar. Half done already and due very soon.

I just sent in a curriculum for the math class for art students. It's Math 105 at the SF Art Institute, starting this Thursday (page 4 of this listing). I don't know whether I'll need to change the curriculum as I go...
