Open Lab Notebook

Brief updates on my daily work. For more polished postings about math, collective behavior, research collaborations, and such, see News and Research.

I hope to work toward a more complete open notebook: for now I'm only posting updates on some of my work.

Here's the first batch job for the Laplacian paper: average transitivity vs. time for 1000 powerlaw graphs of 100 vertices:

I'm becoming more interested in what to do when an issue is identified, as opposed to when a proposal is made (a proposal is one thing a group can do when there's an issue). So I'm thinking about the stuff that happens before a proposal is brought up. In that phase there's generally a facilitated discussion, or else informal discussion outside of the frame of the meeting. Facilitated discussion can include small-group breakouts, brainstorming, bringing up more or less structured questions, and various other techniques.

And now: animations of how the Laplacianoid operation changes actual graph structures!

I fixed a bug in the plotting code and another one in the simulation, so now the animations are convincing.

example visualization of a 10x10 eigenmatrix of the Laplacianoid of a 10-vertex graphWorking on this paper about the Laplacianoid, a sort of chimerical object that can gradually make a network into one that's more clustered.

I've typed up notes from a very information-rich one-on-one session with Roan Kattouw, author of much of MediaWiki's API code, on how to write an extension that provides custom API calls and uses Ajax to invoke them:

It might be useful to integrate some of this into the official documentation on For right now I've just dumped it into my wiki.

I'm working on a new paper on the research wiki:

It's about using the structure of a network (its graph Laplacian, for those who care) to operate on the network's structure itself. Sort of blurring out the network connections so that I get more connected to my friends' friends, like (if it's a social network).

My existing math and simulations on this project are also on the wiki.

I've just learned (Thanks Todd!) that you can study a series of ever-larger random trees (genealogies in population genetics models, for instance), that has an infinitely-large-tree limit which is a continuous object! Imagine a continuous thing that's like a tree!

I have two probably ill-informed questions in my mind:

The math class for art students is done and grades are in. I count it a general success, or at least not a failure. I added some closing notes on what I'd do differently in the future:

After talking about it in last Friday's talk in Canada, I've written up the Pizza Exercise for the research wiki:

Here (on my wiki) are the slides for the talk I'm giving in the morning on my consensus dynamics project. The second slide is a placeholder, to remind me to show the #SciFund project video I made.
